Dickson Division launches effort to open a Habitat HomeStore in Dickson
Dickson residents have asked for it, and Nashville Area Habitat’s Dickson Division is ready to bring it: a Habitat HomeStore in Dickson!
When it opens will depend on how long it takes to raise start up funds. Proceeds from the Houses of Hope Appeal Luncheon at the Renaissance Center on March 22 will be used to help launch the HomeStore. The division is also seeking grants for this purpose.
Habitat HomeStores sell new and used home-related items and building materials at generous discounts to the public. All proceeds are used to construct more homes to sell at zero percent interest to people who are not able to afford a conventional home mortgage. The two Nashville locations have funded 15 homes in just six years.
The Habitat HomeStores also keep tons of perfectly good items out of the landfill every year. Additional benefits include tax write-offs for merchandise donors, jobs, volunteer opportunities and a retail outlet that offers real savings in these tough economic times.
“We get calls all the time from people wanting to shop or donate,” said Chris Greene, development manager for the Dickson Division. “Everyone we talk to gets excited about it. We see it being a great blessing, not only for Habitat’s mission but also for everyone in Dickson County and the surrounding area.”
Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity’s two HomeStores in Nashville are located at 8th Avenue South (selling new and used household and office furnishings) and just around the corner on Division Street (selling building materials and appliances). The Dickson store will use these successful models as a pattern for operations.
Once open, the Dickson Store will accept donations of merchandise, including home furniture, office furniture, drapes, rugs, appliances, cabinets, doors, windows, paint, wallpaper, artwork and many more items for re-sale. The store will not carry clothing or hazardous materials.
