Family Services Volunteer Opportunities

Budget Coach

Qualifications

  • Financial background with the ability to coach and encourage low-income individuals. This position requires a great deal of maturity and sensitivity to families’ personal information and situations.
  • Willingness to listen and be a partner with a family.
  • An interview with the Family Services Director will determine qualification as a Budget Coach.

Responsibilities

  • Discuss the importance of being financially prepared, through money management and how this affects homeownership.
  • Explain the use of daily and annual expense tracking forms or other methods used to capture and evaluate the family’s spending habits.
  • Explain the importance of and the process for reconciling bank accounts.
  • Review weekly and monthly spending to compare planned and actual expenditures.
  • Review the family’s credit report, discuss and develop plan to pay all collections.
  • Discuss the importance of an emergency fund and other savings.
  • Prepare a final evaluation report on the partner family’s progress, accomplishments, and weaknesses to be given to Family Services staff.

Schedule and Commitment

  • Meet with assigned partner family eight times over the span of three months according to the class schedule.
  • A cycle of coaching runs three times a year–Nov-Jan, March-May, July-Sept. Generally Monday nights, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Exact dates are determined approximately one month prior to the starting date and will be provided to interested volunteers. Classes are held at Habitat’s corporate office, 1006 Eighth Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37203.
  • Coaches are not expected to participate each cycle, but a continual commitment is preferred. Makeup nights are available as needed.

Training and Support

  • An orientation is scheduled for all new budget coaches prior to each class cycle to review the basics of Habitat’s program and the goals of budget coaching.

HomeWORKS Instructor

Qualifications

  • Passion and enthusiasm for our mission.
  • Good presentation skills with experience facilitating classes for adults.
  • Strong background or expertise in the subject area on which you will be presenting.
  • Basic understanding of Habitat program and families.
  • Ability to communicate with all types of people with various levels of English language skill.

Responsibilities

  • Propose an idea for a class to be offered as an elective. The topic should be related to successful homeownership, and fall under one of the following categories: Homeownership, Community Involvement, Financial Management, or Elective (Life Skills/Personal Enrichment).
  • Develop class learning objectives with Habitat staff.
  • Develop instructor outline & material for 1.5 hour class that meets learning objectives. The more interactive the class the better.
  • Lead classroom activities in such a way that learning will take place.

Schedule and Commitment

  • Classes may be scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday evenings from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. depending on the schedule and instructor’s availability. Classes are held at Habitat’s corporate office, 1006 Eighth Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37203.
  • HomeWORKS instructors only commit to one class at a time. Afterwards, the instructor and Habitat staff work together to determine whether or not that class will be offered again (based on class evaluations, the instructor’s availability and the upcoming HomeWORKS schedule).

Training and Support

  • An orientation will be scheduled for all new instructors prior to developing a new class, to review the basics of Habitat’s program and the class objectives.
  • Our classroom is fully equipped with a computer and projector that can facilitate PowerPoint presentations, Internet usage, and DVD viewing. Dry erase boards and flip charts are available and copies can be made at the Habitat office.

HomeWORKS for Kids Instructor

Qualifications

  • Education major preferred
  • Experience in working with children
  • Self-motivated, detailed-oriented, and creative

Responsibilities

  • Develop class learning objectives or deliver Habitat developed courses which meet set learning objectives
  • Provide classroom leadership and a healthy learning environment
  • Maintain a safe and secure learning environment for Habitat Partner Family children
  • Facilitate volunteers for HomeWORKS for Kids Program

Schedule and Commitment

  • Classes are taught on Monday and Thursday nights, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.; occasionally Tuesday nights from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Classes are held at Habitat’s corporate office, 1006 Eighth Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37203.
  • Must commit to at least one calendar quarter

Training and Support

  • Lesson plans are provided in HomeWORKS for Kids Training Manual
  • Report to Family Services Coordinator

HomeWORKS for Kids Volunteers

Requirements

  • At least 16 years of age
  • Enjoy working with children

Responsibilities

  • Assist HomeWORKS for Kids Instructor with classroom activities
  • Maintain a safe and secure learning environment for Habitat Partner Family children

Schedule and Commitment

  • Classes are taught on Monday and Thursday nights, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.; occasionally Tuesday nights from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Classes are held at Habitat’s corporate office, 1006 Eighth Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37203.
  • Volunteers must arrive at 5:00 p.m. and stay until 7:00 p.m.

Training and Support

  • All volunteers will meet with the Family Services Coordinator for training
  • Volunteers will assist HomeWORKS for Kids Intern in the classroom
